EI: “For us, olive trees are a matter of resistance”

Planting olive trees is a matter of resistance for the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (or APN), a non-profit organization based in Amman, Jordan.

The organization began in 2003 with the goal of replanting one million trees on Palestinian land. By 2008, they achieved this goal and now hope to plant one million more trees in Palestine. They began organizing in 2001 against the wall being proposed by the Israeli government. Since 2002 the illegal construction of the wall has resulted in the confiscation thousands of dunams (a dunam is the equivalent of 1,000 square meters) of Palestinian land, uprooting olive trees as well. APN was initiated by volunteers brought together under the slogan, “They uproot one, we replant ten.”

Rand Wahbeh details her work with the APN and the continued struggle to save the olive trees. She describes exactly what the olive trees mean to the people of Palestine.

Voice of Palestine speaks with Ehab Lotayef in Cairo. An Egyptian Canadian poet, activist and engineer, Lotayef was part of the Gaza Freedom March Coordinating Committee. Ehab told us about how Egyptian authorities had stopped the 1400 delegates from being able to participate in the March and the various protest actions delegates had taken around Cairo. He also explained the difficulties for the organizers in trying to handle the situation and also take care of the delegates who found themselves stranded in Cairo. He commented on the Final Declaration issued just a few days earlier that stressed support for the Gazan people and for the global Boycott Israel movement, and noted that the event had succeeded in solidifying an international support network.

Real News: Gaza Freedom March in Israel

Organizers hoped an international delegation of 1300 activists from around the world would break the siege on Gaza by marching through Gaza to the northern border and through the Erez crossing, then joining the Israeli march. The Real News reporters attended the Israeli side of the protest, and though the Egyptian government prevented the activists from entering Gaza, hundreds gathered to raise awareness of the desperate situation in Gaza a year after Operation Cast Lead.

In recent months, since the public push for The Goldstone Report, Israeli authorities have intensified their repression of activists on both sides of the segregation wall. Though Israel tries Palestinians and Israelis under separate legal systems, with the former being prosecuted in a military court and the latter in domestic, civil courts, both have seen an escalation in detentions. The recent cases include Mohammad Srour, Mohammad Othman, and Abdullah Abu Rahma, all activists from the Occupied West Bank. The most recent arrest is of Jamal Juma’, an international known human rights activist and the coordinator of the Stop the Wall Campaign, a grassroots network of popular committees fighting Israel’s segregation wall.

AIC: Tristan Anderson’s Parents Speak Out

They should spend a day in the West Bank

For the last three months, Ta’ayush activists have been accompanying Palestinian farmers from Safa to their lands just below the settlement of Bat Ayin. Since a child from the settlement was murdered in April, settlers have been consistently attacking Palestinians when they attempt to work in their fields, as well as burning the fields themselves – all under the nose of the IDF, which has done nothing to prevent the crimes or punish them. Ta’ayush activists return to the area.

A picnic in the West Bank

Members of the peace organization, Ta’ayush, set out to have a picnic at an illegal outpost called Givat Hadegal next to the settlement of Susya in the southern West Bank. On the way to the picnic they were stopped at the Gilo checkpoint, held for an hour for no reason and then told to go home. After arriving via a different checkpoint and beginning the picnic in protest of the outpost, three people were arrested and the group was removed from the area by a closed military zone order.

Last video from the Spirit Of Humanity before Israeli forces boarded

This video is the last footage taken on board the Spirit Of Humanity before its voyage to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza was prematurely ended by Israeli special forces. It shows the atmosphere inside the cabin as the crew try to negotiate with the Israeli ship via radio.

Settler attacks in the south Hebron hills

Members of Ta’ayush and the Christian Peacemaker Teams accompany sheep herders from the village of Tuba to their lands near the settlement of Maon in the Southern West Bank. The settlers of Maon have often attacked the children and anyone with them including the CPT teams. The volunteers also intervene in a settler attack on Palestinians near the illegal outpost of Avigal.

Free Gaza boat intercepted by Israeli war ships

This was the last phone contact with the Free Gaza ship Spirit Of Humanity before it was boarded by Israeli naval personnel. The 21 humanitarian activists were detained and the ship towed to an Israeli port. The sound quality is low due to jamming interference from the Israeli navy.

IDF attacks nonviolent activists in Safa, West Bank

Several people were injured and 26 arrested on Saturday in the West Bank village of Saffa near Hebron. Israeli soldiers blocked peace activists accompanying Palestinians to their agricultural fields near the Jewish settlement of Bat Ein.
