Fatima Mohammadi, aboard the Mavi Marmara, describes first hand her accounts of the initial approach of the IDF and later the use of such excessive violence that resulted in loss of life. She points out that there were already two casualties on the boat before the commandos boarded the boat. As the Mavi Marmara announced over and over that there were wounded people on board, the IDF ignored this and did not respond but continued to use force and fire on the crew members. The devastation and horror described is a full on military assault carried out on humanitarian workers.

“Israel is not just sending a clear message that we don’t want you back and we don’t want you to run another convoy, but this is an intensely strategic way of keeping anybody out of Gaza to see that over the past year and a half since the massacre, and especially since the siege began, that this society and the economy and the people and the livelihood of the people there are in such a poor state that Israel does not want anybody else to see it and they need to maintain that power and that control over this entire area to not allow for change to happen and this convoy challenged that.”

As the MV Rachel Corrie, the last boat in the Free Gaza Movement’s Flotilla, is being dragged to Israel’s Ashdod port after being boarded and taken over in the early hours of Saturday, Israel continues to react to its Flotilla attack. Protests have been taking place throughout Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories. In the meantime, The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky investigates how Israel prepared for the Flotilla attack, and how the media repeatedly portrayed a connection between the activists and terrorism. After the attack, Israel went on the offensive to prove there was indeed a connection to terrorism. The IDF published a press release saying the activists on board the Mavi Marmara ship that was the site of at least 9 deaths on Monday morning were actually al Qaeda mercenaries. When Tarachansky and journalist Max Blumenthaul questioned the IDF for evidence of this allegation, the IDF said it didn’t have any and changed the title of the press release to “attackers of the IDF soldiers found without identification papers.”

At roughly 4:00 a.m. on Monday morning Israeli navy and air force troops intercepted a convoy of six ships that attempted to deliver 10,000 tons of aid to the besieged Gaza strip. The convoy, known as the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, was inspected by several governments and was a highly publicized action. Israeli officials warned the ships they will not be allowed to reach Gaza’s shores, when the ships attempted to do so in order to break the siege on Gaza, the Israeli army attacked them, leaving 20 international activists dead and dozens injured. Hundreds are currently in Israeli jails. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky investigates what Israeli officials and Israeli media have been reporting about this attack.

On Monday, Israeli commandos boarded ships in the “Freedom Flotilla” attempting to bring humanitarian aid to residents of still-blockaded Gaza. The aggressive response by Israel turned deadly, with at least nine activists killed. The international community has reacted with shock and outrage; protests have erupted around the world outside Israeli embassies, with protesters even teargassed in Paris. Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled a long awaited meeting surrounding peace talks with President Obama and headed back to Israel to do damage control, and Turkey, from where the flotilla departed, has recalled its ambassador and issued a travel warning to its citizens.

Huwaida Arraf was on one of the ships; she joins us via phone from Ramallah, along with Norman Finkelstein, to tell us what happened to her and offer some analysis on the situation.

The ships are now in the Mediterranean Sea, near Cyprus, with hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on board. They are waiting for some European politicians to join them. There are also reports that the Cypriot authorities are preventing the politicians from leaving land to join the ships further out to sea. Mohamed Vall has been hearing why the campaigners are so determined (29 June, 2010).

Phil Weiss provides us with his experience and analysis of the US media’s stand, and their one-sided coverage and one-sided censorship on issues and cases related to Israel and the Israel lobby. He discusses the parallels between the tactics used in Gaza by Israelis and those implemented during the holocaust. Mr. Weiss talks about the Jewish identity question around the Israel lobby, the Obama administration’s hypocritical stand on and lame no-response response to the Goldstone Report, the importance of Jewish money and the Israel lobby to Obama and the Democrats, the recent changing perception of Israel, and much more.

Philip Weiss is an investigative journalist who has written for The Nation, The New York Observer, The American Conservative, Harper’s Magazine, and New York Times Magazine among other publications. He is the author of American Taboo: A Murder in the Peace Corps and an editor of the website Mondoweiss, which covers the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Planting olive trees is a matter of resistance for the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (or APN), a non-profit organization based in Amman, Jordan.

The organization began in 2003 with the goal of replanting one million trees on Palestinian land. By 2008, they achieved this goal and now hope to plant one million more trees in Palestine. They began organizing in 2001 against the wall being proposed by the Israeli government. Since 2002 the illegal construction of the wall has resulted in the confiscation thousands of dunams (a dunam is the equivalent of 1,000 square meters) of Palestinian land, uprooting olive trees as well. APN was initiated by volunteers brought together under the slogan, “They uproot one, we replant ten.”

Rand Wahbeh details her work with the APN and the continued struggle to save the olive trees. She describes exactly what the olive trees mean to the people of Palestine.

This program was produced by the Electronic Intifada for December 21, 2009.

These champions of human rights, equality, and traditional Jewish ethical values are inspiring fast-growing circles of readers on blogs like mondoweiss.net, rabbibrant.com, and muzzlewatch.com. Don’t miss this event: Adam Horowitz, Rabbi Brant Rosen, and Cecilie Surasky are brilliant, thought-provoking bloggers; in person, they’re absolutely electric.

Voice of Palestine speaks with Ehab Lotayef in Cairo. An Egyptian Canadian poet, activist and engineer, Lotayef was part of the Gaza Freedom March Coordinating Committee. Ehab told us about how Egyptian authorities had stopped the 1400 delegates from being able to participate in the March and the various protest actions delegates had taken around Cairo. He also explained the difficulties for the organizers in trying to handle the situation and also take care of the delegates who found themselves stranded in Cairo. He commented on the Final Declaration issued just a few days earlier that stressed support for the Gazan people and for the global Boycott Israel movement, and noted that the event had succeeded in solidifying an international support network.

Ali Abunimah is editor of the Electronic Intifada and was among the 1400 people, from 42 countries, who recently came together in the Gaza Freedom March. He describes in detail the efforts to gain access to the area, the difficulties with Israel’s and Egypt’s unwillingness to comply with international law, why Egypt has tightened the siege and the Gazans’ continuous suffering under inhumane conditions. He argues why Israel’s use of human suffering to achieve political goals can be categorized as terrorism as defined by the United States.

For months international, Israeli, and Palestinian activists have been planning the Gaza Freedom March. Organizers hoped an international delegation of 1300 activists from around the world would break the siege on Gaza by marching through Gaza to the northern border and through the Erez crossing, then joining the Israeli march. The Real News reporters attended the Israeli side of the protest, and though the Egyptian government prevented the activists from entering Gaza, hundreds gathered to raise awareness of the desperate situation in Gaza a year after Operation Cast Lead.

In recent months, since the public push for The Goldstone Report, Israeli authorities have intensified their repression of activists on both sides of the segregation wall. Though Israel tries Palestinians and Israelis under separate legal systems, with the former being prosecuted in a military court and the latter in domestic, civil courts, both have seen an escalation in detentions. The recent cases include Mohammad Srour, Mohammad Othman, and Abdullah Abu Rahma, all activists from the Occupied West Bank. The most recent arrest is of Jamal Juma’, an international known human rights activist and the coordinator of the Stop the Wall Campaign, a grassroots network of popular committees fighting Israel’s segregation wall.

Jamal Juma’a is the coordinator of the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, based in East Jerusalem. As a human rights activist and advocate of the non-violent civil society campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), he was arrested Wednesday, December 16, 2009, becoming yet another Palestinian to be recently imprisoned by Israel in response to BDS advocacy activity. He along with Mohammad Othman and Abdallah Abu Rahma are among those who have been targeted in the last few months by Israel’s attack on Palestinian human rights defenders.

In this interview, Jamal addresses how to build the growing BDS campaign, linking BDS tangibly to other struggles for social justice, the origins of the BDS campaign prior to it’s official in 2005, as well as Israeli Apartheid Week activities in Palestine itself.
