Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of aid-carrying ships aiming to break the country’s siege on Gaza. More than 19 people were killed and dozens injured when troops intercepted the convoy of ships dubbed the Freedom Flotilla early on Monday. The Israeli Army Radio had earlier said that up to 16 people had been killed. With world wide condemnations after Israeli commando operation, is Israel already paying too high a price for enforcing the siege? What are the likely ramifications of this incident?

Mark Perry on Israel-Palestine, Hamas, Hizballah, and the Taliban

This is an interesting short discussion between writer Mark Perry who broke the story on General Petraeus asking that the West Bank and Gaza be part of the Central Command’s territory. Petraeus denied the report, but as Al Jazeera’s Gregg Carlstrom writes, this triggered an important debate about the military’s view of the costs of the US-Israel-Palestine standoff.

This short clip covers Perry’s views on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the prospects of engagement by the Obama administration with Hamas and Hizballah. Interestingly, he notes that we are beginning to engage the Taliban who are killing Americans while not yet engaging Hamas and Hizballah who are not. His treatment of National Security Council Counter-Terrorism Adviser to the President on dealing with “moderate Hizballah” is worth hearing.

Real News: Indirect talks begin in Middle East

Despite escalating provocations by the Israeli hard-right settlement movement, indirect talks begin this week between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships. On Friday, U.S. envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, will begin shuttling between the two parties in an attempt to build confidence and create the environment for direct talks. Palestinian public opinion is very divided over the start of the negotiations and prominent officials from both sides have suggested it may be too late to create two states, instead opting for one democratic state where all members are equal.

Real News: The fight against Israeli “impunity”

This week, the European Union’s Parliament passed a resolution endorsing the implementation of the recommendations of the Goldstone Report, which investigated war crimes in the attack on Gaza last year. While the motion was received with support from many NGOs, such as the Women’s Peace Coalition, it did not indicate specific actions the EU will actually take. The same has been true for the UN’s process as members of the Security Council said they would veto the report. Many are therefore taking it in their own hands to hold Israeli leaders accountable for alleged war crimes. The legal tool they’re using is called universal jurisdiction and refers to the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 that said countries must be able to prosecute anyone who commits grave crimes. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky investigates what universal jurisdiction is, how it is used, and how Israel is fighting against it.

Conservative minister Jason Kenney has been particularly outspoken in regards to the funding cuts, explicitly outlining that the government cut funding towards KAIROS due to the organizations defense for Palestinian human rights.

As critical voices towards Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinian people grow across Canada and globally the Conservative government has moved in the past years to attempt to stifle democratic discussion on Canada’s policy positions towards Israel/Palestine and to criminalize the growing movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions in opposition to Israeli apartheid modeled after the global solidarity movements against apartheid in South Africa which played a key role in bringing down the racist apartheid regime in South Africa 20 years ago.

Real News: Prosecuting Israel for war crimes

Lia Tarachansky speaks to Fatou Bensouda, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the Palestinian Authority’s appeal to join the group of nations over which the court has jurisdiction. Bensouda says that before the ICC can investigate the perpetration of war crimes during Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, the court would have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in the Palestinian Territories. For that, there would have to be clear borders identified, a task the UN would have to take on. Once the court rules on jurisdiction it would be able to prosecute anyone who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide within the territory, even if (such as in the case of Israel) the perpetrator is not part of the International Court.

Rosenfeld says Ehud Barak decided to carry out Operation Cast Lead, the name given to the attack, at this time to boost his votes for the February 10th election. During election years, politicians known to take the most hard-line position against Palestinians tend to gain more seats in the Israeli Knesset. Operation Cast Lead now threatens escalate into a ground invasion as Israel amasses its troops and tanks at the Gaza border.

Real News: Hamas and Fatah tug of war

The fighting between Hamas and Fatah has calmed down for the time being. Deadly clashes between the two rival political factions led Fatah fighters to flee to Israel for protection. One hundred and fifty Fatah fighters were relocated to the West Bank by Israel. In an editorial The Lebanese, The Daily Star stated that Hamas and Fatah are a bigger threat to Palestinians than Israel. Executive Director of The Electronic Intifada Ali Abunimah believes that outside forces have also contributed to the instability in the region.
