Hajo Meyer, an Auschwitz survivor, speaks in Sheffield on 25th January 2010 at a meeting organized by the Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign as part of a tour organized by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network. Meyer is joined by Dr. Haidar Eid of Al-Aqsa University.

On January 27, Holocaust Remembrance Day, leading politicians from the U.S. and Europe will join in honoring the memory of Jews killed in the Nazi genocide. Yet the immensity of that tragedy is dishonored by the hypocrisy of the ceremonies: those who pay homage to the victims of yesterday’s silence are silent about today’s inhumanity. We say, “Never again!” For anyone. Never again for the people of Gaza. Never again for all those struggling against dehumanization, racism and genocide everywhere, every day.

Dr. Hajo G. Meyer was born in 1924 in Bielefeld, Germany. Not allowed to attend school there after November 1938, he fled to the Netherlands, alone. In I944, after a year in the underground, he was caught and subsequently survived 10 months at Auschwitz. He lives in the Netherlands, where he works as publicist and essayist. A member of IJAN, Hajo Meyer is on the board of the Dutch group “A Different Jewish Voice”, part of the coalition of European Jews for Just Peace. He is the author of three books, on Judaism, Holocaust and Zionism.

Dr. Haidar Eid is a refugee whose parents were expelled from the Zarnouqa village in 1948. Dr. Eid is a member of the PACBI Steering Committee and a co-founder of the One Democratic State Group. He currently lives in Gaza, where he is an Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at Al-Aqsa University.

This program was produced by Sheffield Indymedia for January 25, 2010.

With publication of the Palestine Kairos Document, the Alternative Information Center interviewed Reverend Dr. Naim Ateek, a co-signatory of the document and founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center based in Jerusalem.

The Palestine Kairos Document, issued at a 11 December meeting in Bethlehem, echoes a similar summons issued by South African churches in the mid-1980s at the height of repression under the apartheid regime. That call served to galvanize churches and the wider public in a concerted effort that eventually brought the end of apartheid.

The authors of the Kairos Palestine Document believe that current efforts in the Middle East are confined to managing the crisis rather than finding pertinent and long term solutions to the crisis.

They reject any use of the Bible to legitimize or support political options and positions that are based upon injustice.

Through the logic of peaceful resistance, the authors believe that resistance is as much a right as it is a duty, as it has the potential to hasten the time of reconciliation. Reverend Dr. Ateek reviews the background and ideas behind the Palestine Kairos Document in this interview.

This program was produced by News From Within for December 21, 2009.

Fuel For Truth, a New York-based “pro-Israel” advocacy group, hosts events at Manhattan nightclubs, drawing crowds of upwards of 1,000.

Jeff Klein’s excellent adventure this summer was a mission to Gaza, the Palestinian beachhead between Egypt and Israel, to witness resilience, as he says, amidst horrific destruction. From Jones Hill in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Jeff Klein is a retired machinist and union leader. He’s an almost regular working-class hero from the heart of the Boston melting-pot, with a highly irregular susceptibility to strangers and suffering, and a need to see things for himself.

On Monday, the 26th of May, 2008, Akiva Orr spoke at the offices of the Alternative Information Center in West Jerusalem. Akiva was born in Berlin in 1931 and immigrated to Palestine with his family in 1934, growing up in Tel Aviv. He served in the Israeli Navy in 1948 and after the war studied mathematics and physics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In the early 1950s, Akiva became critical of Zionism, joining the Israeli Communist Party in 1953. He has written several books including “The Un-Jewish State: The Politics of Jewish Identity in Israel,” “The Other Israel: The Radical Case Against Zionism,” and the “Direct Democracy Manifesto.”

At some the finest academic institutions in this country an intellectual battle of huge importance and passion is being waged about the nature of U.S. involvement in the Middle East and this country’s support for Israel. Today we examine the conflict behind the conflict — namely, what occurs when the forces of politics and patriotism collide with the concepts of free speech and academic freedom? Joining us to discuss these issues and more is Joseph Massad, Associate Professor of Modern Arab politics and intellectual history at Columbia University. His newest book “Desiring Arabs” is currently in bookstores and online.

Among the most invisible contributions of the gift economy are efforts deployed by activists, especially peace activists in Palestine. Dating back to the early 1900’s and continuing until today, Palestinian women have sought alternatives to conflict first by establishing charitable societies to provide food and shelter, and bring hope and healing to those devastated by the Zionist enterprise. Later, women became more politicized, took to the streets to protest and challenge the brutal occupation and to protect their children from Israeli soldiers. The world press continues to ignore this aspect of nonviolent struggle. While led by women, it has not been exclusive to women’s efforts. The Israeli response to peaceful demonstrations and civil disobedience has been incredibly brutal. Not only against Palestinians but also against internationals and Israelis –the International Solidarity Movement, Women in Black and others — who joined Palestinians in their struggle for freedom. In contrast, the U.S. government continues to underwrite the dismantling of Palestinian society by further militarizing Israel, providing it with financing, and giving it diplomatic cover in the form of a disingenuous “peace process” and the UN votes to shield Israel from international law. This presentation will contrast the patriarchal values underlying US policy to the values of the gift economy that characterize the struggle for Palestinian freedom.

This talk was presented by Sylvia Shihadeh at the International Conference on the Gift Economy in 2004.

George Cadman of Free Radio Santa Cruz interviews Nasser Abufarha about Fair Trade/Organic in Palestine. Nasser Abufarha is the the Chair of the Palestine Fair Trade Association and the Director of Canaan Fair Trade based in Jenin, Palestine.

The Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) is a national Palestinian union of farming and producing cooperatives, traders, and processors based in Jenin that promotes and supports fair and equitable trading principles. These principles are developed locally by PFTA and are compatible with international fair trade principles and in sync with Palestinian traditions. Furthermore PFTA is active in promoting fairly produced Palestinian products in international fair trade markets in Europe, North America, Australia, and Japan.

Canaan Fair Trade products are produced by the cooperatives of the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA). PFTA is a national Palestinian union of farming and producing cooperatives, traders, and processors based in Jenin that promotes and supports fair and equitable trading principles. PFTA promotes producing co-operatives such as olive oil, honey, couscous, sun-dried tomatoes, almonds, wild flower seeds, and crafts. The largest are the olive oil producing cooperatives.
