    The Shouting Mountain

    July 21st, 2007 | Occupation News | | Comments »

This documentary recorded and produced by Seth Porcello in July of 2006 (just prior to the war on Lebanon) features audio of the people in the village of Majdal Shams shouting across the minefield (1967 ceasefire line) that separates them from their relatives in Syria. This very tangible sound of a border, and occupation, serves as a point from which to tell this story. As one hears the Safhia family, who very graciously allowed the recording their conversation, one hears without interpretation what it is to go on living and coping with the reality of never being able to reunite with one’s family. Through their bullhorns they give voice to the border through the silence of the minefield. Through a documentation of this border, the reality of life in the Golan comes into focus as the boundaries of land and water resources reinforce this basic structure of the occupation that begins at the shouting mountain.

Seth Porcello is an independent journalist living in Montreal Canada where he works with CKUT 90.3 FM. During the summer of 2006 he worked as a news editor at the IMEMC.org in Beit Sahour Palestine where he produced four radio documentaries on the Occupied Territories.

Palestinians in Iraqi No Man’s Land; Part 1

    July 16th, 2007 | Refugees | | Comments »

As death tolls and temperatures rise in Baghdad, there are more than 1400 Palestinians stranded in a purgatory between Syria and Iraq. These Palestinians find themselves not only reviled and targeted in Baghdad, where many have lived for the past 60 years. Now they live in tents in the desert, left to wonder why none of the world’s governments will give them safe passage. Furthermore, so they claim, when the rare offer of resettlement comes, they’re left waiting desperately, hoping the government of “their country,” the Palestinian Authority, will permit the move. Many claim the PA is using them as just another pawn in a shell game of victimhood, distraction, and deal-making.

In part one of a two part series, these Palestinians (or are they Iraqis?) speak about desperate circumstances in Baghdad, and the reasons they fled the country they called home for generations. After they fled Baghdad, they found their circumstances still desperate, and perhaps in some ways worse. Syria has closed its borders to Palestinians, Jordan is closed to Palestinians and Iraqis alike.

IMEMC: This Week In Palestine – April 6, 2007

    April 6th, 2007 | Occupation News | | Comments »

This Week In Palestine for March 31st through April 6th, 2007 is a service of the International Middle East Media Center.

In the West Bank this past week, nonviolent resistance against the occupation and wall construction continued. In Bil’in village, 15 protesters were injured Friday during the weekly demonstration against settlement and wall construction. Six protesters, including two Israelis, were injured in demonstrations in Al Ma’assara village near Bethlehem.

International sanctions against the Palestinian Authority unity government continue, though Europeans countries are beginning to host talks with Palestinian officials. US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Palestine on Wednesday as part of her tour of Middle Eastern nations including Lebanon, and Syria.

The Israeli military carried out 24 invasions of Palestinian communities in the West Bank this week. At least 36 Palestinians were abducted, bringing the yearly total to 897. Israeli checkpoints continue to heavily restrict travel throughout the West Bank despite Israeli claims that these restrictions have eased. Israeli settlers continued to escalate their attacks on Palestinian civilians.

In Gaza, Israeli undercover forces carried out several attacks. Palestinian fishermen continue to be targeted by the Israeli navy and two Palestinians were wounded. Civil unrest continues to plague Gaza with civilians injured amidst the fighting. BBC reporter Alan Johnston is still being held captive by unknown people. His abduction sparked protests by Palestinian journalists in solidarity.
