First, IMEMC’s current weekly report of current events. Then, Amy Goodman’s interview of Professor Norman Finkelstein. Finkelstein is one of today’s clearest voices about Israeli war crimes, which is not heard in mainstream media. He points out the obvious and normally overlooked fact that the massacre of Gaza was not part of any war. Gaza has no soldiers, only victims, some of whom are labeled as “militants.”

Lia Tarachansky speaks to Fatou Bensouda, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the Palestinian Authority’s appeal to join the group of nations over which the court has jurisdiction. Bensouda says that before the ICC can investigate the perpetration of war crimes during Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, the court would have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in the Palestinian Territories. For that, there would have to be clear borders identified, a task the UN would have to take on. Once the court rules on jurisdiction it would be able to prosecute anyone who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide within the territory, even if (such as in the case of Israel) the perpetrator is not part of the International Court.

George Cadman of Free Radio Santa Cruz interviews Peretz Kidron about the current political situation in Israel and about his book, “Refusenik! Israel’s Soldiers of Conscience”. Peretz Kidron is a freelance journalist, broadcaster and writer. In the late 1960’s he became active in the radical left and the peace movement in Israel. He is a founding member of the Israeli Council for Israeli-Palestinian Peace and serves on the steering committee of the Israeli human rights group B’tselem. Having refused to perform military duty in the occupied Palestinian territories, he now handles international contacts for Yesh Gvul (There Is A Limit). Founded at the time of the invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the group has become the voice and campaigning vehicle for the so-called refuseniks-Israeli soldiers who refuse morally objectionable assignments (notably in the West Bank and Gaza).

In the West Bank, Israeli bulldozers destroy farmland near Um Salamunah village, south of Bethlehem, targeting farmers with plastic bullets, tear gas, and sound bombs. Palestinians near Hebron were abducted by the Israeli military. In Nablus, operation “Hot Winter” seemed to come to a close. In the Gaza Strip Israeli gunships opened fire on fisherman and civilians at Tal Al Sultan beach near Rafah. East of Rafah, farmers were attacked by tank fire. The Al Quds Brigades, an offshoot of Islamic Jihad, claimed a rocket attack on Israeli areas outside the northern end of the Gaza Strip in retaliation.
