The Gift of the Peace Movement in the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict

    May 5th, 2007 | Society | | Comments »

Among the most invisible contributions of the gift economy are efforts deployed by activists, especially peace activists in Palestine. Dating back to the early 1900’s and continuing until today, Palestinian women have sought alternatives to conflict first by establishing charitable societies to provide food and shelter, and bring hope and healing to those devastated by the Zionist enterprise. Later, women became more politicized, took to the streets to protest and challenge the brutal occupation and to protect their children from Israeli soldiers. The world press continues to ignore this aspect of nonviolent struggle. While led by women, it has not been exclusive to women’s efforts. The Israeli response to peaceful demonstrations and civil disobedience has been incredibly brutal. Not only against Palestinians but also against internationals and Israelis –the International Solidarity Movement, Women in Black and others — who joined Palestinians in their struggle for freedom. In contrast, the U.S. government continues to underwrite the dismantling of Palestinian society by further militarizing Israel, providing it with financing, and giving it diplomatic cover in the form of a disingenuous “peace process” and the UN votes to shield Israel from international law. This presentation will contrast the patriarchal values underlying US policy to the values of the gift economy that characterize the struggle for Palestinian freedom.

This talk was presented by Sylvia Shihadeh at the International Conference on the Gift Economy in 2004.

    Women In Palestine, Part 5

    June 17th, 2005 | Occupation News | | Comments »

This is the fifth of a six-part series looking at the role of women in Palestinian society and resistance. It was produced by the International Middle East Media Center.

Invasions like the one described in the previous installment are numerous in the city of Qalqilya and elsewhere in the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Israeli government is also currently constructing a wall through Palestinian land, creating new borders for the state of Israel that will annex up to 40% of the Palestinian West Bank when the Wall’s construction is complete. Itadel Mamer lives in the Palestinian village of Battir, which is currently being enclosed by the Wall.

Jewish activists from the US and Israel have joined Palestinians in their call for an end to the occupation, for Palestinian human rights, and for self-determination. Kate Raphael Bender is a Jewish activist from California who was recently deported from Israel for protesting against the Wall that the Israeli government is currently constructing through Palestinian land. In this segment, recorded in jail, she discusses the issue of immigrant labor in Israel.

    Women In Palestine, Part 4

    June 17th, 2005 | Occupation News | | Comments »

This is the fourth of a six-part series looking at the role of women in Palestinian society and resistance. It was produced by the International Middle East Media Center.

While many female Palestinian prisoners remain in prison, their counterparts on the outside have had to contend with another type of prison: the prison of occupation. For while Palestinians recently elected a President, the Palestinian Authority has little real control over the reality on the ground.

The borders of the Palestinian areas are tightly controlled by the Israeli army, and all Palestinian roads and towns are blocked by Israeli checkpoints. Ala is a student from the Palestinian city of Qalqilya. She describes an Israeli military invasion, a common occurrence in the walled-in city of Qalqilya.

This is the third of a six-part series looking at the role of women in Palestinian society and resistance. It was produced by the International Middle East Media Center.

As the Israeli military occupation of Palestine drags on amidst promises of ‘disengagement’, women in Palestine and around the world are bearing witness to the brutality of the occupation and demanding that it end.

Recently, the Israeli government released several hundred Palestinian prisoners. None of those released were women.

Ayman Abu Eita is a Palestinian from Beit Sahour village who was held for several years in Israeli prison before being released.
